This chapter opens with a conversation between Tsubaki and the Governess. The Governess is surprised to learn that Mr. Subaki is interested in the contents of her journal. She is glad that he is so interested in her, and she is pleased that he has found her attractive. She says that she is making progress with him and that they are making progress together. She tells him that she does not know how to tell if she loves him or not because she is falling in love. She wants to know if he has a woman whom he prefers to her. She asks if he would need her to be his "pretend girlfriend" and if she would need to ask such personal questions as "a pretend i dont have go" .
