About This Chapter
In this short scene, we learn that the protagonist is a young woman who has just returned from a trip to the Galapagos Islands. She is very excited about her trip, but she is also very nervous about what she will find when she returns to the mainland. She worries that she will not be able to return safely because of the large number of animals that inhabit the island. She also worries about the fact that she has not been able to communicate with the other passengers on the ship, who are also very excited to see her. The ship's captain, who is also the protagonist's father, tells her that she is welcome to return home, provided that she behaves herself. The protagonist, however, is not so sure about her father's opinion of her, and she worries that her father will not approve of her return. The captain then tells the protagonist that she should not worry about her return, as she is safe in the Galapagos.
