In this short scene, the young narrator tries to convince himself that he has nothing to do with his sister's recent sexual encounter with Mr. Harker. Instead, he is thinking about the sexual encounter that took place the night before. He tries to make himself feel guilty for his part in the incident, but he is unable to resist the urge to fight against his self-centered nature.
