The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, when Zillah is still a young boy. He has come to visit his father, who has died. Zillah tells him that his father was a very handsome man, but that he did not trust him. He tells Zillah that he wants to protect the people Zillah loves, and that he will do so for the sake of his father.
