About This Chapter
In this chapter, Cai tells us that he is still alive because of the battle at the "infinite peak" . He says that if he hadn't fought against the gods, the mountain would still be around. He also says that he doesn't regret what he did to himself, because he didn't have the feeling of remorse at the end of the night. In fact, he says, he blames himself for everything that has happened to him. He compares himself to a red spider lily, who used to love him, but no longer loves him. Cai says that giving a name to something is giving life, and that the only way all living things can be connected to one another is through the "ring" , which is the passage through which plants and animals return to life after they have died. The ring is the key to opening the passage of life into the world, and Cai explains that it requires a sacrifice from a god to open the passage. He explains that he was supposed to be a sacrifice to protect the ring, but he was actually used as a sacrifice so that the god could open up the "passage of reincarnation" and "resurrection" of the nine thousand plants demons. Cai concludes that the death of a plant is not the end, but the beginning of a rebirth.
