This chapter opens with a soliloquy by the demon mistress, who tells the reader that the contract she signed with the other four demons has been broken. The contract stipulates that she will protect the ji family for generations to come. She tells the audience that she has come to remind hua-lian of his kindness. She also tells him that kerr is still alive and will die if the spirit ring is destroyed. She asks him to talk to her, but he refuses to do so. He tells her that she can use the divine power of the ring even when the ring is sealed.
