About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the Emperor penguin's obsession with the scarlet fever. The narrator tells us that he's going through a "phase" . He's not sure if he'll make it through the next two days, but he doesn't want to die. He wants to be able to tell the other members of the species apart, so he can figure out what's wrong with them. He tells the audience that the poison is starting to affect his whole body, and he can't even cast his healing magic on his own body. The townspeople think that Emly is some kind of demon child, and they think that the priest and the mayor must have had something to do with the disappearance of Emly's mother. Emily's harp has been used to call for an angel, and the townspeople think it's a sign that she's possessed by a demon, and that she has powers. The mayor of the town has been healed, but Emly hasn't. So they're going to try to figure out who's responsible for the disappearance, and Emly isn't going to help them. She's just going to get some sleep, and then she'll be ready to go back out into the world. She tells the town folk that she needs to talk to her dad, who is supposed to protect her. The townsfolk are confused, because they think Emly must be a demon child. They're also confused because they heard rumors that the salamander was in the town some place where they need to protect Emly.
