About This Chapter
In this short scene, we are introduced to Mr. Man-Mei, a third-grader at the school where he works as an English teaching assistant. We are told that he is a very different person from the other students in the class because he does not give a "fuck" to any nicknames but writes them on his diary. He is also very different from the boy in the hat because he cannot talk. He calls him a "weirdo" because he is different from other students because he has no words. He tells us that he was scolded by his mother for not giving a nickname to anyone, but that he has never given one to anyone. He says he is the "real pearl" of the class and that he should have bragged too much to the crowd. The crowd applauds him for his good work. They also note that this is the day that bao-zheng is celebrated as the "cultural symbol of justice" in Chinese society. They are also told that this day is also the day when the word "justice" is used to refer to a person who has done a good deed. The teacher asks him if he is stupid and if he has not done his homework. He replies that he did not. He then tells him that the last time he was dragged out of class to run and lose, he was not allowed to do so again. This time, the teacher asked him to go to the school canteen to settle the old scores, but instead he went out and played without him. He asks if this is his English homework, and the teacher says that he forgot to take the homework out. He forgives him and asks him to
