The chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, in which the protagonist is talking to his grandfather about his engagement to the protagonist's granddaughter. The grandfather tells the protagonist that he heard rumors of the engagement from his grandson, and he wanted to announce the engagement to his grandson so that he would have time to prepare for the wedding. The protagonist tells his grandfather that he wishes his grandfather and grandson would hurry up so that the wedding could take place immediately.
