About This Chapter
The cat is so upset that he doesn't know why he's upset. He's afraid that his owner, the cat's owner, is scared of him. The cat tells his owner that he once was kept by a man who called him "tama," which means "boss." The cat says that if he gives him money, he'll give him a few years of food. He tells his son that he won't let him have any room in his heart, because money has nothing to do with his heart. He says that he needs to go back to get him some rest, and that injury will heal itself. When the cat sees that his paw has been soaked in a "high grade nip" , he realizes that the rag is soaked in some kind of high-grade "nipper" . He asks his owner if it was him, and the cat tells him that it was "abyhei." He then tells his father that the tattoo on his back is the end of his line, because back in his day, when he was building the town, many of his friends died. That's why, he says, you have to learn pain and never forget it. The tattoo is the last thing he wishes for his son to make friends with.
