About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a soliloquy by a cat named Rinehart, who says that he despises cats who "let themselves be k yang" and "put all their faith in those with power" . He says that cats are spineless because they do not have "standards for good and evil" , and that they "have no standards for what is right or wrong . . they merely have faith in the power of those with it . The cat says that the action of a man named Krook, who is a prisoner from the pound, is pure evil, and he should be killed. He compares Krook to a "young aristocat" and says that if he were to defeat him, he would have to remove Krook's advantage of long limbs. He adds that he has never seen a cat like this before in his life and that he will have to "cover em up" if he is to defeat Krook. He also says that there are "some bad guys" that he chooses to keep around, and Krook is one of them. He tells the cat to come along with him in the fight, but the cat refuses, saying that he is a fool.
