About This Chapter
The scene opens with a young man delivering a newspaper to a young woman. The young man tells the woman that he has a gift for her: a piece of bread. The woman asks the young man how he got the bread, and he tells her that he works very hard to earn a living, but that his love for her began to strain his relationship with her. He explains that she stayed with him because she liked his food and gifts, and so he worked harder to earn even more money. But that gave him less time to be with her, he says. He apologizes for his rudeness, saying that he was just tired. He says that he knows it is wrong to hit women, but he didn't really hit her in the face. He admits that he hit her once while they were watching a funny movie, and that she had no choice in returning to the lake. He asks her to give him another chance, and she says that she has something to show him. She tells him that the boat that she used to sail on was turned into a sandwich shop. She thanks him for his kindness, and they are happy together.
