This chapter opens with a conversation between the Governess and her daughter, Pamela. The Governess tells her that she is in love with her son, and that she has a contract with him. She asks her daughter to tell her fortune, but she does not know how to do so. She tells her daughter that she would have taken him to her father's palace to be his personal fortuneteller, but her father did not want to do that. She says that her son is beautiful, and they discussed swordsmanship, poetry, and music. She warns her daughter not to question her decisions again, and says that if anyone criticizes her decisions, she will rip them all to pieces. She adds that she will give her hand to her daughter if she so much as scratches her face, and she will think of her when she is not with her. Pamela tells her sultana that she was victorious once again and that the sultan envies the love she has for her son. He says that he hopes that the child of his will have a "trusted servant" like her. He asks her what she means by her home town. She replies that she abandoned her master, and now she abandons him. He promises to show her what happens when a slave challenges his master. He also asks her to find him and give him the necklace that berial gave her.
