In this chapter, we are told that a rumor has been spread that Mr. Lee has fallen in love with a girl. Mr. Bennett, the teacher, tries to calm the situation by reminding the reader that he will still be paid during the vacation period and that he is excited about his paid holiday. He tells his students that they can have a bottle of whisky as a gift for their teachers and that it is hard to know if it will do them good in the long run, but now that it has happened, it is hurting him. He tries to convince his students not to worry about him, but they do not listen to him.
