In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters who have been introduced to the reader before. The first person introduced is the Governess, who tells the reader that she and her husband have spent a great deal of time and effort hiding Hu and Anqi from the authorities. The Governess explains that she wants to turn herself in to the authorities, but she does not want to get her family involved in the capture of her. She also explains that the person in charge of the capture is Hu's father, who will do whatever he can to capture her. He will even freeze her and put her into storage for safety reasons. She tells him that she would like to take advantage of the situation by turning herself in when she has time to do so.
