The next morning, the two men wake up in the middle of the night to find that they've both been cooped up in a room together for the past few days. They're not sleeping together because they don't want to sleep with each other, but because they're afraid of what's going to happen if they get into a fight. The two of them decide to go to bed together, and the narrator tells us that he's feeling pretty bad about it. He thinks that if he had known about the whereabouts of the fugitive, he would have issued an arrest warrant for him, and he'd have had to run to his house to get him.
