About This Chapter
The scene opens with a discussion of the previous day's performance, in which Aragn complains about being sexually harassed by the director. The director, however, seems to be hiding something from the audience, and the young actor wonders if the director is trying to make a change in the subject of the play. He tells the young man that he wants to see what the director's angry face is like, so he gave him direction notes. The young man says that he plans to get braces so that he will be able to act more like himself. He says that his identity as an actor is one of saying what he wants or needs to be. He wants to be liked by a lot of people, and he says that if he thinks about every detail, he will go nuts. He adds that he doesn't have any funny things to say, and so he won't say anything to anyone. He asks if he got his room number from Tsukumo, and then he says he's going to go back to his own room. He wonders if he'll have to act with someone until he dies, or if he can act with a friend until he does. He's not sure what that means, but he says if he acts the way the director tells him to, then he can stay as a part of the cast for a while longer. He also says that the director will do his best to make everyone laugh in the play, and that's why he stayed behind so he could be alone. He thinks it's a good idea that he should be confident in his own script, because that'll make him stand out from the crowd.
