The scene opens with a rehearsal for the play "Three Sisters" that is to be performed in the following month. The director asks the actors if they would like to rest a bit before the performance. They all agree that they would, but the director tells them that the play is too romantic for them. He tells them to move their stuff away from the stage so that he can tell them all about Solyony. He says that he wants them to feel like there is "friendship there" and that they are the home that he does not want to lose. He then asks them to hurry up and get ready for the performance because he is going to go over to Kiku's house.
