About This Chapter
At noon, the "costume guest rock specialist" complains to "penny" about the "stupid club" that labels guys as "men" so that they can't get out with them. He's trying to get her to hate him, he says, but she doesn't seem to care. He tells her that he's just trying to "get rid" of the "club" and that she's "the only me" . 2:32pm: The costume guest starts training the clerk on the cash register. The clerk is supposed to "make small talk" , but the guest says he likes small talk because it's self-contradictory. The guest says that back in the mountains, people still wear cowboy and mountain men's clothes, and tourists still buy those. Back in the city, they have accessories, items clearance, and all kinds of random stuff. He says that he thought that if the animals were starving during hibernation, they'd get nuts and dried fruit and toss them in the trash. He asks what the "midnight tagger" business is, and the clerk says he hates the term because it sounds like a sworn enemy to him. He also says he knows about "penny's" boyfriend, but he'd like to know what's going on in the club. He complains that the club is supposed not to tell guys that they're waiting for their turn to go out with the girls. He adds that "the geology but penny" isn't supposed to tell the guys about the club, and he says that's why they've been staring at him all day. He apologizes for being late, and says he'll take care of some things for him.
