Chapter 2 opens with a discussion of the "Pyrethrite of Maybe She's Right Maybe I Will End Up Joining the Ranks" . It's clear that this is a reference to the fact that the narrator thinks the narrator should join the ranks of geologists. The narrator is bummed out that he's not a member of the ranks, but he also thinks that maybe he'll find a way to join. He's also bummed that he can't concentrate on his studies at home. He wonders if maybe she'll be drawn to the ranks because she's a good reader. He also wonders if she'd be attracted to a guy who's socially retarded. He asks her why she doesn't have the energy to concentrate on her studies. She tells him that she needs to stop yelling at him about her studies and concentrate on what's important to her. He tells her that she should test for pyrite on the rocks around her and then strike them with a hammer to see if they're made of pyrite. He then asks her about her latest designs. She says that she has designs that are window worthy, but now that her boyfriend wants to be open with her, she has to make them exclusive again. She then tells him about how her boyfriend is just as worthless as her boyfriend, even though they've both got pretty faces. He says that he wants to make her feel nice to him so he can mean to her later without her leaving . He thinks that being nice just makes him more powerful, and that's why he likes to be nice to her in the first place. He wants to use his power to rescue girls from the pyrites of their boyfriends.
