In this chapter, the narrator tells us that he's "at the top" of the social heap. He's been hanging out with a guy named Tom Kotenig, who's apparently been in love with a girl named Jenny. The narrator thanks Jenny for coming to the party and tells her that she's a "special meeting" for the month-long celebration of Jenny and Tom's engagement. He also tells Jenny that he hopes that Jenny isn't "a pyrite ! . . pyrite !" . Jenny is shocked and says that she doesn't know if Tom is a "pyramid" or not. She also says that Jenny is "kind of a hoping" for a break from Tom, but that she can't say no to Jenny because she wants to "drop these off" . She's not the only one who has been "creepy" and "ruined" by Tom. He caught her with some pirates, she says, and she swears that he did something terrible.
