About This Chapter
The narrator tells Dinah that she never planned on having children, and that she is sorry for her mother's death when she died. The narrator says that Dinah's life has been hard, but that it is not her fault. She says that she and Dinah will move to a better place as soon as they can save enough money. Dinah says that her hair is different, and the narrator tells her that they will go shopping in the town of watertown. Dinah tells the narrator that she will scream if she does not hang back, but the narrator says she has a clear shot at her, and she will flank Dinah on the left so that Dinah will scream when she sees her. Dinah tries to defend herself, saying that she has told her to hang back because she knows that Dinah does not know how to protect herself. Dinah asks the narrator why he has been so difficult lately, and he says that maybe he does not need her protection. Dinah replies that maybe she doesn't need protection, because she is trying to protect her.
