In this chapter, we learn that Madame Bovary's daughter, Erzebet, has gone to the tomb in search of the "holy flower" and the "monstrous monkshood" that she believes are in the tomb. She has come to look for the flowers, but she is unable to find them. The mausoleum, she says, is meant to be a place where the souls of those who have lost their lives are kept. The flowers are meant to remind her of her dear friend, who is about to die, and she is paying the price.
