The scene opens with xiangwang and his daughter, weiyi, in the middle of a heated argument. Weiyi accuses her father of slapping her out of her dress because she has received a love letter from a man named shaoyu. She accuses him of being a part of the family, but he insists that he has always been a "dispensable person" and that she has deserved it. He tells her that her uncle, xia, has misunderstood his intentions and that he will not discuss the matter with her. He asks her to drop him off at their home and then he will go to the mall to buy some things. He then asks her why she is so curious about the letter, and she tells him that it is a "love letter." He asks if she intends to ignore him and she replies that she does not intend to do so.
