About This Chapter
When the narrator returns to the Underground Man's quarters, he finds that the young man has changed his mind about falling in love with the girl. He is now determined to stay with the young woman. The Underground Man tries to comfort him by saying that he will find a way to cool him down. The young man tries to soothe him by telling him that he has some alcohol to drink, but the narrator refuses to take any of it, saying that it is not good for him. He tells him that the doctor has closed all the clinics for the day because of the hot weather, and that he should take off his hat and put on his shirt. He says that he is sorry to trouble him, but that he hardly takes care he will take care of the problem. He then tells the young Man that he was the person who brought him back, and he apologizes for the trouble he has caused him. The narrator feels that he must find out what he said, once his body temperature is back to normal, to find out the truth about what happened to him.
