The narrator feels a foreboding that the world will not tolerate the evil spirit of xiaoshi. He decides to go back to China with the dead spirit. He asks the nun where they should go first, and the nun tells him to go to the floating lanterns on the banks of the river. The lanterns are supposed to burn out, but the nun says that it is not supposed to do so at the time of year.
