This chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the previous chapter, where the narrator tells the story of how he met the old man. The old man, who is now dead, was the one who told the story to the young woman. The young woman, who has come to the temple to visit her lover, is the woman who offers "the waters of oblivion" to those who have died in the underworld.
