The next morning, the protagonist wakes up in a "saloon gloom" . He can't sleep because his boss, Mr. Sean, is older than him and is also his boss's son-in-law. He's also a "guy" , which is a big deal for a guy like him. The protagonist is so freaked out by his boss that he runs away from the room. He tells everyone that he's been looking for him everywhere and that he hasn't thanked Sean properly for his kindness. He says he'll buy him a fancy dinner as a thank you. He also says that Sean is going to go to a restaurant called King's, which he thinks is as good as any of the other places in town. He invites everyone to come to his house for a party at 7 p.m.
