About This Chapter
The next morning, Dr. Greenaway tells the group that the new mayor of London, Harriet Beecher Stowe, has arrived at the dig and wants to see a new film. He expects that the government will shut the dig down and that the mayor will have to take a leave of absence from the dig for a few weeks or months. Dr. Evans suggests that they take a look at the ring of lichens in the British Isles, which are a natural buffer between the mainland and the Indian Ocean. The ring is the ancient center of British culture, and the mayor says that he fell in love with the group a while back, though he doesn't understand why the government dropped the dig in the first place. The mayor asks the group to buy him some pretty things, so that he can pay them back for the work they've done. The group says that they're just looking like the "world's largest fish turd" out there, and that they need to be paid too. They also remind the mayor that ten years ago, he wanted to be the mayor, but the government told him that moving the dig up wouldn't work and that he'd have to cause an uprising.
