About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a soliloquy by a young woman named Rose. She tells the audience that she is a member of the Brotherhood, and that she has come to join the fight against the witches. She asks the young woman why she was chosen to be a part of the fight, and the woman replies that she does not have a heart. She says that she buried her heart in a grave alongside her mother many years ago. The young woman says that her friends will never ask her to choose between the two of them, because they believe that defeating the witches will be worth the sacrifice. She adds that the bonds they share are one of love, which is why they will never possess each other. She also says that the fight is about to end, because she knows that she will be killed by the witches the next time she sees her guardian. The girl is beyond the beach now, and she begs to be killed. The woman says she can get her in, but that the whole world has gone mad, because the witches claimed that they killed a patrol because they believed it had the plague.
