The narrator tells us that the retreating troops are still in the firing range, and that the General Anxi military governor is trying to stop them. He says that if they don't stop the advancing troops at the pass, those who have made it inside will all be killed. He tells us to take aim at the enemy's five hundred steps. They'll all be dead by the time the chapter ends.
