About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the scene in which Corinna's son, Lorenzo, is killed by his mother's servant. The servant tells the boy that his father is dead, and the boy begs Lorenzo not to tell anyone about his father's death. Lorenzo tells him to go to the farmhouse, where he will be safe. The boy tells him that he has found both dead, but that one soul is not ready to leave. Lorenzo says that the book has brought him back to the valley, and now he is twice dead. He tells Lorenzo to send word to all the peoples of the land, and to unite them against viktor. The dragols have forgotten the ways of the past, he says, and they are content to sit and fish. Lorenzo reminds the boy of the time he fought his own war, and asks him where the people were when he led an uprising against the emperor in the fourth century. The revolution was quickly cut down by the emperor's forces. The body of the dead are thrown into the "cracks of doom," where they remain frozen in defeat. The people are ready to fight again, Lorenzo says, but they need Lorenzo to lead them.
