The next morning, Alphonse and Viola arrive at the house of their mutual friend, Ethan. Viola thanks Ethan for getting her permission to leave the monastery. Ethan assures her that the house is safe and that she will be able to enjoy the fresh air and the company of her new friend. Viola, however, is not so sure. She tells Ethan that she is going to rebel if he treats her in a way that does not allow her to be free. The two men begin to argue about the meaning of life. Viola says that she likes to cook, but that she does not like the taste of sweets. She asks Ethan if he would like to cut back on the amount of sweets he gives her. He replies that he would rather cut back than grow up with such a taste
