About This Chapter
The Underground Man continues to rant and rave about how he's doing his best to make sure that the contract with his employer doesn't come to an end. He's also worried about the fact that the devil will be forgotten once the contract is over, and it'll be hard for him to ever meet anyone again. He also worries about how the contract will affect his own health, since he'll never be rewarded for helping his employer. He wants to know why the contract was made, and why it's so important to him. He asks why the Underground Man keeps meddling in his business, and the answer he gets is that he keeps making excuses. He then asks why he keeps trying to help him, and he gets even more frustrated when he hears that he'd better tell him the truth about the contract and about him. In other words, he wants to hear the whole truth about what's going on in his life. He says that even if the contract does not go well, the devil's existence will be maintained, because the only person who can make a contract with the devil is the person who signed it. If the contract goes badly, the Underground man will die.
