The scene opens with the narrator's description of the smell of garlic, which he smells as he makes his way to the door of the apartment where he is staying with his new wife. The smell is so strong that it makes the narrator feel as though he is making a return visit to his former lover. The narrator, however, is not fooled by the garlic smell, for it is the same strong garlic that he used to enjoy cooking on his own.
