The narrator begins this chapter by telling us that seven years ago, he was a senior at college. He was working as a time-shifter when his parents got into a car accident. He sent them on a vacation so they wouldn't have to worry about him. He didn't realize that his decisions had an impact on the lives of other people, including his parents. He made a point of avoiding making any decisions, and yet, after he met him, he realized how unfair it was that he was being treated. He tells us that if anyone hates him, just tell him that you hate him and that he will give up. He says he will drag no one who is being unfair who tells him he loves him until he tells her that he loves her. He adds that he got scared and ran away when he finally met her, but that now he is bitter that she will never see him again.
