This chapter opens with Hiroshi's description of a dream in which he and another man are sleeping on the floor. The two men are both naked, and Hiroshi is shocked to find that he is the one in the dream. He tries to wake up the sleeping man with a blanket, but he is unable to do so because he is afraid that the man will resist him. Hiroshi tries to convince himself that the dream is a dream and that he can do anything he wants in it. He tells himself that if he wakes up the man, he will be able to fly away from the dream because he will realize that it is not a dream at all. He then tells himself to think of the dream as if it were a real dream, and to imagine that he has the power to do anything that he wishes. The narrator then tells Hiroshi that if the dream were real, he could even fly away. He also tells him to think about it in a dream, when he realizes the dream to be a dream. When he does this, he is able to control his emotions. He says, "I can even fly, you can even do anything you wish. You can do whatever you want, just think of it as a dream." The narrator tells himself, "If I woke up Hiroshi, I could do anything I wished. I could even control my emotions." He then adds, "When that happens from the moment , I can even flee . . you can do what you wish, just about anything."
