In this chapter, we learn that the problem with the indictment was that it was written so that everyone would know that he was guilty, and that he would have to admit his guilt in order to get out of the indictment. In other words, the problem was that he had discovered secrets about the worm feeder body, so he had violated the agreement that he should live in the valley as an atonement for the harm he had done to the people of the valley. The problem was, of course, that the girl had come to the valley to ask him to help someone, and he had refused, thinking that she was a good friend. Now that she has left, he feels like he is finally going to die from waiting. He wonders why it took him so long to come back, and wonders if he will be able to teach the others a lesson if he is stuck in this valley. Finally, he realizes that he has to leave the valley, because he can't find anyone to help him. He swears that if anyone leaves the valley within 100 years, he will die with it.
