About This Chapter
One year later, Mr. Tong is back in Shanghai. He's happy to be back, and he's even more happy to have found his home. He tells Mr. Guo that he has been through a lot in the last year, and that everything was too much for him when he returned to Shanghai. The shareholders' council of his company was dissolved, and the shares also were withdrawn. Every day, Guo's mother had to deal with creditors, so she was afraid of leaving the house. He went around and tried to convince his friends to support him financially, but they found flaws in the company's business practices, and they were eventually sent to prison. He handed the company over to his two sisters, and then resigned from the company. He saw the note that Guo left him, and saw that his wife had had two skin surgeries and that she was in love with a Frenchman. He says that he doesn't owe Guo anything, and asks if he can use his clothes to make cotton diapers for his son. Mr. Huo and Guo have settled down in the fishing village where they've been living for the past year.
