Chapter 41 opens with a lecture by the Senior Senior Brother. He tells the audience that he is teaching taoism to the disciples and that they should go to the academy to listen to the lectures. He warns them that if they do not go, it will damage their Senior Brother's image. The Senior Brother tells them that the doctrine of truth has no rank and that any disciple of the academy can attend the lecture. He also says that they can listen as long as they understand the doctrine. He says that he has been cultivating the great inferno dragon recently and found it to be weak. He asks the Senior Brother if he can try another technique to see if it is the same as the inferno dragon. The senior brother says that cultivating is not about killing or fighting, it is a way of life. The ancients say that once a person is born, they should seek to win something great. He explains that the ancients do not say that we should not seek to defeat others, but that once we are born, we should look for something great in the world. He then asks the senior brother where the path to immortality lies. The sage says that there are only 50 great paths, but only one true path leads to immortality.
