About This Chapter
In the autumn of 997, eleven months after the storming of the Bastille, the king of the Franks returns from the battlefields of the Crusades. He asks his wife , the soothsayer, if she has anything for him to take with her. She says that she does, but that she would like to go for a walk. He tells her that they should not let anyone see them, and that he will take care of anyone who had a misfortune of seeing them. He says that he is going to look for survivors in the bushes. He then tells the mule driver to take the wounded man to the new fortifications just outside the city walls of the city of Macon. Macon appears, still alive, and they go to his place.
