About This Chapter
In the autumn of 997, in a remote part of the Norwegian wilderness, the spirits of the dead tell the chief of the tribe that a man will come to the island during the coming winter. The chief says that the entire tribe has started to watch the sky above the island, and that they have waterproofed the land with tar. He tells the chief that he should not go for a swim in the water because the fog will make it impossible to reach the island. Arnulf says that he doesn't like the fog, and the chief warns everyone to shelter. A strange light suddenly appears on the horizon, and arnulf wonders if the souls of the fallen sailors are afraid of a sharp blade. He is thankful that the monster is gone. He says that they are the only ones alive who survived the storm. He wonders if they should call for help, because they will freeze to death in the cold. He has two other men in Helsborg, and he wants to get home as quickly as possible.
