The next morning, the three arrive at the island's main church, where they find a shepherd who has seen the "Passion of Christ" in the church's oldest manuscript. The shepherd tells them that he saw the passion of Christ on the island, and that he believes it to be a sign that the city will be destroyed in the fire of the heavens. The three try to convince the shepherd to let them in, but the shepherd refuses, saying that it would be too dangerous for him to do so. He tells the three that they should have caught the murderer before he got to the bridge, where he would have been killed by the "ghouls" on the other side
