About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that in 996, the city of Split will be divided into two parts. The first part will take place in the southern part of the city, and the second part will be in the northern part. The narrator says that he hopes that this will be the case, since he has a lot of gold. He asks the narrator to go home and give him some alms. He tells the narrator that the next day, the Bishop of Split is going to be damned like him. He says that the Bishop promised to free him if he obeyed the Bishop's orders. The next morning, he tells the Bishop, he will come and drink some water from his hand to help him get what he has been dreaming about for so many years. He also tells him that the port of Rome, ostia, is in the midst of a heavy storm, and that he should hurry up and get rid of all the filth there. He then tells the story of the poisoned ministers, and says that ealdhan doesn't like him at all. He adds that the manuscript is so important to him that he needs to get it to the Bishop so that he can give it to him. The woman who has come to see him says that all the friends of hers are ready to receive him, but she asks him if it would be best to come before his guests. He replies that he would like to, but that the woman will be killed by the madwoman if he does so. She asks him where he is in his research for the Abbot of Manfred, and he tells her that he has obtained a right to use the pigeons from the Pope himself. She tells the man that her name is Emma and that she is here for him. She also says that she has seen him breaking his neck by falling at the Abbey of Cluny in Burgundy. She says that they are rid of brother frothaire, who gave his life
