About This Chapter
When the scene opens, the young man and his father are on their way home from work. The young man complains to his father that he has not been allowed to leave the house because the servants are not allowed to do so. The father tells him that they are going to get some money from the government and that they will be able to do better the next time they go to the government office. He tells his son that he should be rich because he works as a servant to his wife at home. He says that the servants don't have the right to do anything in their home because they are servants to their wives at home, and they go out and "go crazy" when they are allowed to. When the father asks him why he hasn't left the house yet, he says that he is just home late from work and has not yet removed his makeup. He then asks his son why he thought the man would come home earlier than he usually does, and he says he thought he would see him and find out that he had gone to the trash can to throw it away. When he finds out that the man has seen his car, he asks his father if he has permission to go out with him. The director says he does not need permission because he is the son of the man who gave him the permission. The two men begin to argue about whether or not they should go out together.
