In this chapter, we learn that the fox family has been associated with sorcery, and that the master of the snake-stalker is planning to use the family's association to his advantage. The master tells his brother cha that he should try to destroy the snake's remnants, but cha is too lazy to try and do it himself, so the master tells him to go ahead and try it himself. He tells the brothers that they are lucky that they have a big bell to keep them safe, because otherwise, they would have swallowed a mouthful of ash. The brothers try to explain to the master how they are able to protect the fox clan from evil, but the master is too stubborn to explain. He asks the brothers where the flag came from, and the brothers say that it came from the "black pupil ghosts." The master is furious that he has to break the link between the formation and the sorcery, or else he will die.
