In this chapter, the master of the bai family explains the significance of the white bell that zhizhi carried with him to the mountain. He explains that the bell represents the sacrifice of the five families of immortals, or spirits. The five families are the Bai, the Ming, the Gamut, the Fang, and the Shmoop. Since ancient times, they have cultivated the spirits of these five families.
