The next morning, Hinata wakes up in the middle of the night to find that she has not received a word from her lover. She wonders why he has not come to see her, and she wonders if he has come to avoid her. She realizes that he is not looking at her in the same way that he would look at a woman of his social class. She also realizes that the weather is getting worse, and that the owner of the mah-jong parlor is expected to be there until morning.
