In this chapter, we are introduced to a young woman who works in a high-ranking department. She is a "subordinate" of the head of the department, and she is described as being drenched in sweat and "weak in the knees" on the morning of her first day on the job. She does not seem to be affected by the events of the previous day, but she is aware of the fact that the man she works for is "a good, cheerful guy" and that he must be popular with his superiors. When she is asked where the documents that she is supposed to use in the afternoon are, she says that she has to submit them to her superior, who is waiting for her on the ninth floor of the building.
