In this chapter, the narrator tells the story of how he and his friend, Yap, caught a huge, wild-caught fish, which they named "Splash." Yap tells the narrator that the fish is not for sale on the market, but Yap says that he has arranged for it to be sold "somewhere special." The narrator, however, is not satisfied with this statement, and he begins to feel very hungry. He asks Yap if he can eat some of the food that Yap has prepared for him, and Yap replies that he cannot, for he has not yet eaten all of it. The narrator then asks Yap to open the fish's box so that he can examine it. Yap tells him that he will have to wait a while before he can do so, but the narrator is determined to eat the fish.
